Bruker Alicona’s SensorX turns optical 3D metrology into an OEM-ready component for inline, in-process quality control
At EMO Hannover 2025, Bruker Alicona will introduce SensorX, the company’s first OEM-ready metrology sensor with Advanced Focus-Variation. For visitors of EMO, the premiere can be seen inside Nagel’s NaPrep automation cell for tool edge preparation. But the real breakthrough lies elsewhere: SensorX is designed to be integrated directly into machines and automation systems, changing how manufacturers approach measurement altogether.
Instead of being a separate inspection step, 3D surface measurement becomes part of the process itself—inline, in real time, and exactly where it matters most: on the shop floor.

SensorX isn’t a repackaged lab instrument—it’s a metrology module designed for embedding. Its compact yet sturdy sensor head works hand in hand with a remotely mounted electronics box, offering flexible installation without compromises. Interfaces are standardized, its software communicates easily, and it even monitors its own temperature, current, and voltage to stay reliably on point. In short: this is a sensor that knows where—and how—it belongs.
When we talk about OEM strategy, we don’t mean selling a standard measuring machine with a different label. We mean enabling machine builders and automation specialists to embed SensorX directly into their equipment.
This turns metrology from an external checkpoint into a native machine capability. A machining center, grinding machine, or robotic automation cell equipped with SensorX doesn’t just manufacture—it measures, monitors, and corrects quality automatically. For production managers, QA leads, and automation specialists, this is the foundation of true in-process metrology.
The technology backbone is Advanced Focus-Variation, enhanced with Focus Probing and Vertical Focus Probing. Together, they allow SensorX to capture features that other technologies struggle with:
All of this is non-contact, repeatable, and traceable—delivering the reliability that modern shop floor metrology requires.
SensorX was never designed to live in a lab. It was built for the realities of shop floor manufacturing, where heat, vibration and speed are part of everyday life. With every scan capturing millions of data points in just seconds, the sensor delivers the kind of dense, high-resolution measurements that modern processes demand. Its 100 mm Z-range ensures that even larger components are captured with the same precision as fine micro-structures, while a robust coaxial illumination system adapts seamlessly to changing surface conditions. At the same time, integrated self-monitoring continuously checks temperature and voltage to guarantee stable, reliable operation. And because SensorX runs quietly below 70 dB(A), it fits into automated cells without adding extra noise to the environment. In short: it is metrology made for production, performing inline, in-process and in real time.
Traditional metrology often creates bottlenecks: parts leave the line, move to inspection, and wait for results. SensorX changes that. With integrated measurement systems, the data is collected in-process, enabling:
For OEMs, embedding SensorX means their machines deliver not only productivity but also a guarantee of quality. For end-users, it means fewer rejects, less downtime, and more consistent output.
The impact of SensorX can be felt across every role in production. For production managers, it means higher throughput and fewer unplanned interruptions, as measurement no longer pulls parts away from the line. Quality assurance specialists gain the confidence of traceable, repeatable data without the delays of manual handling or lab-based inspections. And for automation engineers, SensorX unlocks the possibility of true closed-loop workflows, where machines not only manufacture but also monitor and correct themselves. In this way, SensorX doesn’t just add metrology to production—it transforms quality control from a necessary checkpoint into a built-in driver of productivity and reliability.
The launch at EMO Hannover shows just one application—edge measurement in Nagel’s NaPrep automation cell. But the potential is far broader: tool grinders, machining centers, robotics, medical manufacturing, aerospace components. Anywhere precision matters, inline metrology with SensorX opens the door to smarter, more connected production.
With SensorX, Bruker Alicona isn’t just offering a new sensor. It’s setting the standard for OEM-ready metrology in the smart factory era.
