Insights from Michael Egger, HR Manager at the Raaba site.

Interview with Michael Egger, Human Resources Manager at Bruker Alicona

Working in Metrology

Michael, why is it important to talk about what it’s like to work at Bruker Alicona?

The answer might surprise you: because, at the end of the day, it’s the people who make our products what they are. For me, the "H” in HR stands for Human, the "R” for Relations. It’s about building and maintaining relationships across the entire HR lifecycle – from onboarding to offboarding. These relationships are the foundation of a healthy company culture.

How do you build these relationships?

By doing, not just talking. I see HR as a service hub for all employees. Together with my colleague Claudia, I support team members in Raaba as well as international guests visiting us for training. We handle regional needs, administrative processes, and strategic HR topics within the Bruker Group.

And what about personal development?

For us, lifelong learning is not just a buzzword, but daily practice. We offer in-house knowledge-sharing formats, individual training opportunities, and – more recently – the Learning Hour. Once a month, employees get paid input sessions on communication, solution-focused thinking, or mindfulness. This strengthens not only personal growth but also team spirit.

In addition, I’ve introduced my walk and talk initiative.

Walk and talk? What’s behind that idea?

This is where the "relations” aspect really comes in. Walk and talk is my personal way of being there for colleagues – stepping out of the office to have a real conversation while walking. Whether it’s personal or work-related, everyone can bring up their concerns. We’re all human, and everyone faces their own challenges. So far, I’ve always been able to find solutions that support both the person and, indirectly, the company.

What career opportunities does this create?

A great example is my colleague Michael Kreil. He joined us in 2009 straight after graduating from HTL - a higher technical school in Austria - worked internationally in sales – including China and the USA – and today he’s responsible for global Key Account & Partner Management in Raaba. Career paths like this are not only possible here, but encouraged. We’re proud to offer such opportunities.

One last question: what challenges do you face personally in HR?

As part of a publicly listed company, we need to react flexibly to global market changes. The challenge is to work future-oriented and solution-driven while connecting our international outlook with the local reality in Raaba. That’s what makes my job meaningful and exciting – no day is like the other.

Of course, HR is not immune to innovation either. AI and other new technologies are shaping our field. But as I said at the beginning: it all comes down to how we build and nurture relationships.
