Illumination The specimen is illuminated by modulated light. This light is transmitted through the optic and focused through a beam splitter onto the specimen. Coaxial illumination is created. ![]() Light ray to the specimen and back The light is reflected by the specimen and projected on to a digital sensor in the precision optic. ![]() Movement of the sensor = variation of sharpness As the distance between the specimen and objective is varied the change of sharpness is measured. ![]() Intelligent illumination The correct interaction between modulated light and continuous vertical movement of the sensor are essential for the quality of the measurement. ![]() |

Area based measurement conforming to EN ISO 25178Focus-Variation is an area based technique for 3D surface measurement in highest vertical resolution. Form and roughness are measured with a measurement point density of up to 100 mil measurement points. Results are repeatable and traceable. The technology makes use of the limited depth of focus of an optic. Focus-Variation is included in the most recent EN ISO standard 25178. Results include measurement uncertainty informationMeasurement results are always composed of both measurement value and the measurement uncertainty. Focus-Variation adds information about the estimated repeatability to each 3D measure point. With every measurement value, users receive an estimated measurement uncertainty. That increases quality and validity of the measurement value. Stable and quick measurements in research and productionFocus-Variation is a robust technology for 3D surface measurement. Even under harsh operating conditions, users achieve high resolution results. The stable technology is also insensitive to environmental influences such as temperature or ambient light, as it is operating with a large data volume. At the same time, Focus-Variation is extremely quick: measurement times depending on the surface texture lie within a range of only a few seconds. Focus-Variation for measurement of form and roughness in production Measurement modules for 3D surface measurement with Focus-VariationAll measurement modules of the InfiniteFocus product group are based on Focus-Variation. These include measurement of profile form and profile roughness, measurement of surface texture for area based roughness measurement, volume measurement, 2D measurement and automation. Additional measurement modules enable complete form measurement and the measurement of form deviations, automatic wear analysis as well as cutting edge measurement.
